JUNGLEE PHOOL

Shimla was long on my list of places to visit. While walking on the Mall Road, I found these extremely happy looking, cheer spreading wild flowers growing from the crevices and gaps on the walls and the road. I asked someone what they were called, to which I was told that they were just ‘Junglee Phool’ or wildflowers. I was amazed to see not only their beauty and tenderness., but also their will to survive.

They may look delicate, but are a tough, vigorously spreading plant that thrives in dry soil and seemingly inhospitable situations. In India, they are found mostly in the hill stations. Native to Latin America, The Fleabanes (the formal name of the Junglee Phool) have been awarded The Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit!

Waving at you from the unexpected corners of Shimla, Junglee Phool tells a story of strength, survival, and happiness.

ABOUT THE PIECE

Junglee Phool was a piece that took the most time. After trying several techniques, I concluded that the only way to achieve the true characteristic of the flower was by attaching the petals one by one.

The plant usually grows on walls and crevices. Hence, the black clay used for the base could not be the same as the one used for the plant. Here, the kind of black clay used is much coarser than the clay used elsewhere in the piece
