TIGER LILY

Tiger Lily was a series made for the Tiger Trail project by WWF Singapore. The purpose was to create awareness and raise funds for the tiger conservation efforts in Asia. The Tiger Trail Project took place in 2022, which coincided with the Chinese year of the Tiger.

When I was asked to participate in the tiger trail project, I couldn’t be more excited. Having lived and travelled to Kaziranga and Sundarbans, I felt an instant connection to the cause. For years we had been hearing the numbers of tigers are depleting, and that we need to do something about it. So when this opportunity came to me, I jumped at it !   â€‹

The Tiger Lily, a flower named after the king of the jungle itself, was the inspiration for all the pieces made for the Tiger Trail Project. As majestic and proud as the tiger, one can see the similarities not just in appearance but in poise as well.

LILY .....  TIGER LILY

When I thought tiger, the first thing that came to my mind was the flower tiger lily. And almost automatically, in my mind it turned into a real character. From a tiger she was now a tigress. Nurturing, protective, tender yet very strong. Very close to her feminine side. Wearing her ‘Tiger Lilies’ proudly and welcoming the nature around her.

Just like Lily (the tigress), it is important for me to welcome the nature around me to come together and join me in my art. When I started painting Lily, she felt incomplete. She felt lifeless. Immediately my hand reached for the soil she was standing on, and I  mixed it to the paint. And just like that it felt right. It felt like it was the nature around me was giving birth to my art, and I was just the medium.

The life size sculpture is made of fibre glass. However, being a ceramic artist,  the way the sculpture is painted, it is to replicate the look and feel of highly textured black clay  and porcelain. Two extremes of the color palette. White clay is used to give character to the flowers. The butterflies are made of porcelain.

Here, the butterflies represent the victims of illegal poaching.

Exhibited at the National Gallery Singapore, Sentosa and China Town

TIGER LILY .... THE VASE

The series Tiger Lily was inspired by the flower by the same name. They get their name because of its coloration that resembles a tiger.

The flowers are made of unglazed porcelain and black clay. White and black glaze have been used to show the contrasting spots on the flowers. The vase is made of lightly glazed black clay.

The butterflies are made of porcelain, representing victims of illegal poaching.
